2016 was one of the most exciting, unpredictable years in political history, as it culminated in the election of Donald J. Trump as our President. And, if you can imagine it, the coming year promises to be even more thrilling, with several events that could drastically alter the political landscape for the foreseeable future, if not forever.
If you’re interested in learning what the political future holds, it can be a fun, useful exercise to look at some of the top issues that will be at the forefront of politics this year. Read about the top issues that could shape politics in 2017 and find out how conservatives in Nevada are preparing to lead the way.
1. The Presidential Adjustment Period
The most exciting time for any presidency is the first 100 days, and Donald Trump’s first 100 days look to be one of the most interesting in presidential history. One of the leading issues that could affect the political landscape in 2017 is how President Trump adjusts to the office, since he is not a career politician. To aid him during this critical time, he has chosen people of great substance and achievement for his cabinet. These appointments are under tremendous scrutiny by the Democrats. At the time of this writing the following have been confirmed:
- Rex W. Tillerson, Secretary of State
- James N. Mattis, Defense Secretary
- Jeff Sessions, Attorney General
- Tom Price, Health and Human Services Secretary
- Elaine L. Chao, Transportation Secretary
- Betsy DeVos, Education Secretary
- John F. Kelly, Homeland Security Secretary
- Mike Pompeo, C.I.A. Director
As he works to roll back the disastrous Obama presidency, President Trump can form the country’s political narrative and make meaningful changes to a system many view as broken and corrupt. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tom Price is already hard at work on this as he has been for many years.
2. Repealing Obamacare
Perhaps the biggest issue is the repeal of Obamacare, a cornerstone of the Trump candidacy and a longtime goal of Republicans in Congress. The repeal of the poorly thought out healthcare law and the passing of its replacement will dominate the political conversation.
Expect a contentious fight to overturn the law that should lead political conversation for the first few months of 2017. On his first day in office President Trump signed an executive order titled: MINIMIZING THE ECONOMIC BURDEN OF THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT PENDING REPEAL This first and important step proves that the President is serious about repealing and replacing Obamacare.
3. Building the Wall
Another issue that has political junkies salivating is the plan to build a wall along the Mexican border. President Trump and top Republican leaders have already taken a few initial steps to fund the building of the border wall, and the process sped up as soon as our president was sworn into office. Around the nation and around the world protestors leapt into action to make sure that this issue gives maximum exposure to those with opposing views. Protestors in Mexico City built a makeshift wall out of boxes outside the U.S. embassy and protestors even assembled at the Memorial in Berlin. Throughout the United States, protestors are taking advantage of every opportunity to angrily demonstrate. The building of the wall will be one of the top political issues of the year, and its successful completion will likely have a huge impact on the structure of politics this year and beyond.
4. Fixing Trade
Perhaps the biggest hope for a Trump presidency is that our business savvy leader will be able to reform our one-sided trade agreements and return the prosperity of the American worker. Renegotiating trade promises is to be one of President Trump’s top priorities. If he can fulfill his promise, it could be a game changer when it comes to our political discourse.
